Why Does COVID-19 Cause Loss of Smell?

According to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, up to 80 percent of people who test positive for COVID-19 complain of smell or taste loss. Smell loss is often the first — and sometimes the only — symptom in patients who are infected. There is speculation that the virus causes an inflammatory reaction inside the nose that can lead to a loss of the olfactory, or smell, neurons.
